Macro from a few steps back. Put the extension tube behind the 40-150mm and you're in close-up range without being on top of your subject. A bee, a dragonfly, a spider mid-web — you fill the frame from a comfortable distance, no shadow falling across the shot, nothing spooked into flying off. Autofocus still works through the tube if you want it.
Zoom to frame, not your feet. The 40-150mm lets you pull the composition tighter or wider on the spot — which matters when the subject is over water, past a fence, or somewhere you just can't step closer to.
Steady at full stretch. Magnification multiplies every bit of hand shake, and so does shooting at 150mm. The body's built-in stabilization is what makes a handheld close-up at this reach come out sharp instead of soft.
Three levels of close. The tube is two rings — 10mm, 16mm, or both stacked — so you choose how far into macro you go. Take them off and the 40-150mm is back to a normal telephoto for anything that isn't tiny.
